CUBAN NATIONAL BASEBALL SERIES POST-SEASON
SUPPLEMENTAL ROSTER PLAYER SELECTION
Once the regular season of Cuba’s National Baseball series ends, the managers of the remaining teams can supplement their rosters with players from teams that did not qualify for post-season play. The chosen players and their new teams are announced at a gala, which this year was held at the Teatro Milanes in the provincial capital of Pinar del Rio on October 21.
Artemisa’s manager Dany Valdespino chose the following players for his roster; Vladimir Garcia, Denis Laza, Yordan Manduley, Yunier Mendoza, and Norel Gonzalez.
Granma’s Carlos Marti chose four pitchers and a catcher; Alain Sanchez, Ulfrido Garcia, Yosver Zulueta, Luis Castillo, and Yulexis La Rosa.
Pablo Civil chose three pitchers and two outfielders for Las Tunas; Dariel Rodriguez, Carlos Alfredo Perez, Luis Angel Gomez, Alexander Ayala, and Yunior Paumier.
Industriales’ Victor Mesa chose; Jose Ramon Rodriguez, Fredy Asiel Alvarez, Yunier Gamboa, Wilber Perez and Leonardo Urgelles.
Victor Figueroa of the Matanzas Crocodiles chose; Dachel Duquesne, Osvaldo Vazquez, Yorbis Borroto, Liomil Gonzalez, and Javier Mirabal.
Pedro Luis Lazo of Pinar del Rio chose; Frederich Cepeda, Michel Enriquez, Raul Gonzalez, Yusniel Ibanez, and Yosimar Cousin.
If you are a regular reader of our Cuba Baseball blog, then you will recognize some of these names, including Frederich Cepeda and Yunier Mendoza, two of the best hitters during the regular season. Most teams overwhelmingly selected pitchers to supplement their rosters, with Cepeda and Mendoza being two of only a handful of position players selected.
The Cuban National League held its’ All-Star game over the weekend, the Eastern team led by Pablo Civil, and the Western team by Victor Mesa. The Veteran All-Stars game was held on Friday, with Carlos Gomez leading the eastern team and Rey Vicente Anglada the Western team, and was won 6-0 by the Eastern veterans.
Post-season play begins today in Cuba, and just happens to coincide with the start of the World Series in the U.S.
