DAY 1 “WELCOME TO HAVANA”

  • Depart U.S. to Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport.
  • Meet & greet with guide and driver at airport.
  • Guide and driver will accompany group for duration of stay.
  • Driving City Tour of Havana, including a drive along the famous Havana malecon seawall, Vedado neighborhood, 5th Avenue in the suburb of Miramar, and stops at the Plaza of the Revolution, and Almendares Park., and visit to la Lavanderia, the studio and workshop of Cuban painter and sculptor Rafael Perez Alonso. You will have the opportunity to explore this most unique workplace in the Havana suburb of Miramar, and meet the artist. (3 hours) www.cubafinearts.com www.cubartecontemporaneo.com
  • Welcome lunch at private restaurant.
  • Transfer to B&B.
  • 2:00pm Santeria workshop, this workshop covers the basics of the Afro-Cuban religion Santeria, and includes such topics as the syncretism of Catholicism and African religions, and the role and significance of drums in the religion. The religion is a syncretism of African religions and Catholicism, and is currently practiced by a large percentage of the island’s population. This workshop covers the main deities of the religion, their origin myths, the colors and vestments associated with them, and their roles in human life. A visit to the Casa de Africa is included, and there you will see African musical instruments, artifacts, and a room dedicated to the orishas, the Yoruba deities. Guests are usually amazed after attending this workshop that the many multicolored wristbands and necklaces worn by many Cubans are associated with the religion. (3 hours)

DAY 2 “OLD HAVANA & HEMINGWAY”

  • Breakfast at B&B.
  • 9:00am City Encounter of Old Havana, a walking tour through Old Havana and its five main plazas, with stops at the residence of the colonial era Captain General of the island, the Havana Cathedral, Obispo Street, the Capitol building, and more. Most of our guests in Cuba start their cultural
  • exchanges with a walking tour of Old Havana. This event is directed by one of our professional English speaking guides, and gives you a taste of the island in a very interesting tour, that feels as if you have gone back in time. Old Havana has buildings and streets that are some of the oldest in the Americas, with some buildings dating to the 17th century. Though the buildings are hundreds of years old, they are still used to house a significant number of Havana’s inhabitants. Old Havana features the first church built on the island, a street paved with wooden bricks, palatial residences, and much more! Old Havana is one of the largest, oldest, and most authentic colonial areas in Latin America. (3.5 hours)

  • Hemingway encounter, visit the places Ernest Hemingway regularly frequented, including “La Finca Vigia,” and “La Terraza de Cojimar” Restaurant. Includes the Gregorio Fuentes walking tour of the town of Cojimar, which was the inspiration for the novel “The Old Man and the Sea.” This event also includes visits to room 511 at the Ambos Mundos Hotel, where Hemingway stayed and wrote, and a stop at “La Bodeguita del Medio” and the Floridita bars. This encounter is a must for any Hemingway fan, and covers some of the most productive and interesting years of the famous writer’s life. The tour is wide ranging, going from Old Havana, to the suburb of Miramar, and the southern end of Havana. (5 hours)

DAY 3 “WELCOME TO THE BAY OF PIGS”

  • Breakfast at B&B.
  • 7:00am Transfer to Playa Larga.
  • Cuban History Workshop, covering Cuba’s colonial history from the early 19th Century through the 1959 revolution. Workshop with lecture that covers Cuban history broadly from colonial times to the 1959 revolution, and emphasis on U.S./Cuba relations. (3 hours) This workshop will take place during the transfer to the Bay of Pigs/Playa Larga area.

  • 2:00pm Driving Tour of the Zapata Swamp. This tour allows guests to see one of Cuba’s most pristine natural habitats, and its largest swamp which is home to the Cuban Crocodile. Depending on schedule the Tour will include a visit to a crocodile farm, a major flamingo breeding area, and some of Cuba’s most pristine coastal habitat. (3 hours)
  • Settle into Bed & Breakfast in Playa Larga/Playa Giron, or Jaguey Grande.
  • Meet & greet with fishing guide.
  • Dinner at B&B.

DAY 4 “FISH ON!”

  • Breakfast at B&B.
  • Transfer to dock for prep with guide.
  • FISHING!
  • Lunch provided.
  • FISHING!
  • 4:00pm Return to dock.
  • 4:15pm Bay of Pigs Experience, this includes a short discussion of the events leading up to the invasion of the Bay of Pigs in April 1961, and a visit to the invasion museum. This event will allow guests to visit the area where the Bay of Pigs invasion occurred in 1961, and the surrounding area. A visit to the invasion museum is also included, and depending upon the schedule a short presentation by an actual witness to or combatant in the event will be given. A must for any American visiting the island! (3 hours)

DAY 5 “THE BEST OF ZAPATA PENINSULA!”

  • Breakfast at B&B.
  • Transfer to dock for prep with guide.
  • FISHING!
  • Lunch provided.
  • FISHING!
  • Return to dock.
  • Cuba Flora and fauna Workshop, learn about Cuba’s wildlife, with special emphasis placed upon the sea life around Matanzas, and issues associated with invasive marine species such as the lion fish. This event may include a snorkeling encounter to view coastal marine sea life. (2 hours)
  • Dinner at B&B.

DAY 6 “TRINIDAD & CIENFUEGOS”

  • Breakfast at B&B.
  • 9:00am Transfer to Trinidad, and walking tour of this well-preserved jewel of the Caribbean’s colonial era. Founded in 1514, Trinidad has Cuba’s most original colonial era quarter, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will enjoy a ride in a horse drawn carriage, and visits to the Church of the Holy Trinity, the San Francisco Bell Tower, and the town’s main plazas. Trinidad is over five-hundred years old, and is considered Cuba’s best- preserved colonial town. Trinidad feels like a living museum. UNESCO declared the town of Trinidad a World Heritage Site in 1988, and its wonderful people set it apart from any other destination in the Caribbean. Many of its narrow streets are paved with the original bricks that are hundreds of years old. Stops include the cities Cathedral, the Palacio Cantero, which houses the City Museum, with stops at the artisanal quarter, the Plaza Mayor, and more. A special experience to a unique town that visitors to Cuba should not miss! (3 hours)

  • Transfer to B&B in Havana.

Day 7 “GOODBYE CUBA”

  • Breakfast at B&B.
  • FREE TIME! Car & driver at your disposition.
  • Transfer to Jose Marti International Airport for return flight to Miami or Tampa.
*Available October through July, and on demand. Flight schedule to be determined. Small groups, 6 to twelve guests. ONE ANGLER PER BOAT.
*Fishing at the Salinas Flats will be aboard 18’ Beaver Tail Skiffs with either 40hp or 50hp Suzuki four stroke outboards, and on the Hatiguanico River aboard Bass Tracker Pro160 aluminum boats with 40hp Mercury four stroke outboards.
*This fly fishing oriented cultural exchange includes all listed activities, Cuban entry visa, all transportation, all lodging, 6 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 dinners, tour guide and fishing guide service, and boat rental. If you would like to SCUBA dive instead of fish one morning or one afternoon it is also included. All lodging is in Bed & Breakfast, with photos available before reservation is made.
*In Havana, you will have private transportation in either a classic car in pristine condition with a/c, or a modern car with a/c. Guides are professional and English speaking. Modern Hyundai H1 vans, and Ford E350s are used for group transportation.
*This area of Matanzas province, famous for being the location of the Bay of Pigs invasion of April 17, 1961, is one of the Caribbean’s best flats fishing destinations. Target species include Bonefish, Permit, Snook, Tarpon, as well as Barracuda, Snapper, and Jacks.
